Snapshot

In August 2011, The Department of Energy announced a $132 million loan guarantee that enabled Abengoa Bioenergy Biomass of Kansas, LLC (ABBK) to begin construction of a first-of-its-kind, commercial-scale biofuel plant.

Innovation

Using an innovative enzymatic hydrolysis process, ABBK’s plant will convert 300,000 metric tons of corn stalks and leaves into approximately 23 million gallons of ethanol per year. The project maximizes the use of agricultural crop residues that would otherwise idle, and utilizes feedstock that does not compete with feed grains.

Development

This project will support approximately 300 construction jobs and 65 permanent jobs about 90 miles southwest of Dodge City, KS.

Impact

Annually, the ABBK project is expected to avoid 132,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the emissions of 25,385 vehicles.  The facility will be self-sufficient, using unconverted biomass to generate 20 MW of electricity that powers the cellulosic ethanol plant.
