Snapshot

In July 2010, The Department of Energy finalized a $117 million partial loan guarantee that helped First Wind finance the construction and start-up of an innovative 30 MW wind energy project.  Located in Kahuku, HI, this project will better incorporate wind power into the states island-based, relatively small power grid.

Innovation

First Wind employs the innovative integration of Clipper LibertyTM wind turbine generators and an energy storage and control system, both more efficiently integrating wind power with utility power grids.

Development

The project created 200 jobs during construction. It also provides 10 permanent jobs for plant operations.

Impact

The Kahuku plant’s unique technology integration will significantly improve Hawaii’s ability to use wind as a reliable renewable energy source, as opposed to oil.  The plant is expected to avoid the more than 55,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually and will power approximately 9,000 homes.
